4  General Fly Fishing / General Fly Fishing / The no stocking saga continues ...
 on: Feb 28th, 2010, 11:13am
Started by Trout Hunter | Post by Trout Hunter
The DFG's fish planting program is still not settled. While waters like the Kern River are back to being stocked many waters will remain or become no stock waters. It seems one of the strong factors for making decisions on stock or no-stock is the waters contact with endangered Steelhead. This means: "Lake Cachuma, Lake Casitas, Lake Piru, Castaic Lagoon, Piru Creek, Bouquet Canyon Creek and all the forks of the San Gabriel River drain directly into historic steelhead drainages and will not be planted in the near future."

Other factors including the effect of planted trout on native species other than trout or steelhead are still being evaluated in some areas and may result in no stocking status of other waters including some urban lakes.

One of the possibilities that will be proposed by the DFG will be the use of Triploid Trout for stocking sensitive waters. While Triploid fish have been altered genetically by applying high pressure or heat to the eggs rendering the resultant hatched fish sterile, most scientists will not claim this to be 100% effective. Triploid trout generally grow large and fat and are commonly stocked in the pay to fish lakes. The State of California classifies these fish differently form normal trout in State records.

5  General Fly Fishing / General Fly Fishing / Eastern Sierra Rush Crk. update

Hello Guys and Galss

My name is Dick Dahlgren. I once lived in mammoth and discovered a re-watered trout fishery in Rush Creek in 1984, sued Los Angeles...and eight years later, won. I thought the creek fishery had been restored. But it hasn't

This short fly fishing film is worth viewing and tells the sad story about the status of the Rush Creek. Cal Trout won the battle against the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to restore the trophy fishery to what it was pre 1941. Restoration was begun with heavy equipment. The first two miles are tremendous. Then in 1998 Cal Trout allowed restoration stopped...and the remaining five miles is a failure. I was shocked to discover this...and I urge you to view it and as many of your members as well.

6  General Fly Fishing / Fishing Reports / Big fish hitting on the Kern!
 on: Feb 22nd, 2010, 2:23pm
Started by Trout Hunter | Post by Trout Hunter
Here's another big rainbow that I caught last week on the Kern. There's quite a few big fish in the river and these fish are ready, willing and able to smash a fly. It would be a good time to get up to the Kern which isn't that far.

It's good to be back at the Kern, it's been a while since I've had a chance to fish here.

The DFG stocked two weeks ago on the upper and lower Kern before an event held in Kernville and regular stocking will resume next month after a year of "no stocking" because of a lawsuit. It's good to see the DFG has been able to resume stocking. The local businesses and fisherman are very happy.

Here's Guy Jeans with one of his "slabs"

Second Thing:

Who's going? Would anyone like to get together for lunch before the event? A bunch of us got together before a film festival a few years ago before a different movie event and it was a lot of fun. There are a lot of restaurants in the area. If interested, let me know.
